Linux
I’ve decided to write about other things along with the blog’s main topic of PTSD. I’ll start with something I’m passionate about… Linux!
I’ve been using Linux since before it had any kind of functional desktop environment. Everything was done via command line and configuring and compiling the kernel for your specific hardware was a necessity. Obviously, a lot has changed since then. Linux now has some of the most beautiful and functional desktop environments out there. There is Gnome, KDE, Xfce, and several others out there to choose from. Personally, KDE and Cinnamon are my favorites. As I am currently using Linux Mint I am using the Cinnamon desktop.
I had to leave Linux for a while because some of the essentials for work either simply weren’t available or reliable on any distribution of Linux. That has completely changed and I now use Linux exclusively. I setup Linux on a laptop for my dad over 10 years ago and it’s still to this day running perfectly for him. Of course, for work and play you’d need a more modern computer and just about any of the major distributions (distros) available. I use Linux Mint because it simply works without the need of hours of tweaking the system and apps. I use it for work and play. Steam and my Steam games work fine. I have all the tools I need to get work done as well.
I run and test other distros in virtual machines but none of them have convinced me to migrate to them. There are some very nice distros out there and I’m not knocking them, it’s just that, as nice and fully functional as they are, I see no reason to leave Linux Mint.
I’m very happy that Linux has progressed and grown to the point that leaving Windows was not only painless, but also thrilling. I never liked the fact that Microsoft tracked everything I did while using their OS, I didn’t like that they broke things too often with their updates, I didn’t like that they were putting ads in everything. Privacy was simply not an option with Microsoft. I’m happy to be back home with Linux!
